DIY Paper Lanterns

Schools out and summer has officially begun, which means us moms and dads work overtime finding new ways to entertain our kids right?

No worries though, you can keep them busy without it costing you an arm and a leg. For the next few weeks I’ll be posting a new DIY project that you and your kids will love. They’re hassle free, they’re fun and they’re inexpensive; but best of all, they’re a great way to spend quality time and make fun memories with your little ones.

Today were making PAPER LANTERNS

Paper lanterns can be made in all colors and sizes and you can decorate them with cute stickers too.

They make a great addition to your kids bedroom décor and make great party decorations!

All you need to make these paper lanterns is:

 

 

 

 

 

 

• Paper (construction paper, scrap book paper, card stock or printer paper)
• Scissors
• Hole puncher
• Tape
• Yarn

Step 1:

Fold your paper in half. If you are using paper that has a print on it then fold it with the print on the inside. You’ll see why in step 2.

  OR

Step 2:

Using your ruler make a straight light at the opened end of your paper. This line will indicate where you will stop cutting in later steps.

     

Step 3:

Mark the closed/folded end of your paper with 1 inch marks. Then make straight lines going down.

     

Step 4:

Cut on the lines going no further than the line you made in step 2.

     

Step 5:

Fold your paper with image on the outside.

Step 6:

Roll your lantern so that the ends meet. Secure the ends with your tape.

          

Step 7:

Punch holes on the Upper left and right AND Lower left and right of your lantern

Step 8:

String your yarn through the holes and tie a knot.

               

And you’re done!

Make a few of these lanterns and string them up for your next party, or have the kids make these at the next birthday party and let them decorate them with glitter and stickers.

If you don’t want to string them, then eliminate Step 7 and Step 8 and simply place them on a flat surface, like a dresser or table and place a battery operated candle in them.
