Father’s Day Shoe Shine Kit

Father’s Day is quickly approaching us and I am once again out of ideas. After 37 years of being a daughter to my dad and 17 years as a wife to my husband I honestly don’t know what else to get neither one of them that I haven’t bought or made them already.

I think I’ve done it all!

If you’re in the same situation and need a little inspiration here’s a simple and very inexpensive DIY you can make for that awesome man in your life.

This is one I made for my husband years ago while he was in the military. Anyone who’s in the military knows that having their shoes polished like mirrors is a must. So one year I made him his own kit.

Heres what I used.

  1. Cigar Box
  2. Wood Stain (pick your color of choice)
  3. Vintage Shoe Shine sign image
  4. Decorative nails
  5. Mod Podge
  6. Sponge Brush
  7. Shoe Polish
  8. Brush
  9. Sponge
  10. Cloth

Step 1

Remove all hinges and locks from your cigar box and give it a light sanding

Unfinished Cigar Box

Step 2

Using a dry cotton rag, wood stain your cigar box, inside and out. Let your box dry for several hours.

TIP: When wood staining anything, be sure to always wear a breathing mask and work in a well ventilated area, preferably outdoors. And be sure to alway wear latex or non latex gloves for protection.

Step 3

While your cigar box is drying, do a little google search for “Vintage Shoe Shine Signs” (Say that fast 3 times)

Print, cut and set aside. Heres the one I used plus another cool one I found online.

Step 4

Once your cigar box is dry, then your printed shoe shine image is ready to be glued on, or decoupaged if you want to get fancy with it 😉 Cover the backside of the printed image with a layer of Mod Podge using your sponge brush and place in the center of the cigar box. Gently  smooth out any air bubbles.

Step 5

Place all your shoe shining products and your done!

There you have it. If the man in your life is more of the fisherman type then swap the shoe shine image for an image of a fish and add their name to the box using a black “Paint Pen” or a wood burning tool.

AND swap the items inside for some bait n tackle.
