Nail Polish Dipped Mug with Heart Shape

I first saw this technique on Pinterest and thought it was the coolest thing! I never thought of using nail polish to craft with, So I HAD to give it a try it.

Since Valentines Day is a little less than a month away, I thought why not make a Valentines Day themed mug? I was just going to dip it in red and pink, but decided to take it one step further.

Check it out!

Shopping List:

  1. White Ceramic Mug (you can also get this at the dollar store)
  2. Red and Pink Nail Polish
  3. Heart-Shaped Sticker or Adhesive Stencil
  4. Plastic Bowl

TIP: Wash and dry your mug first so there aren’t any finger prints, debris, marks or stains that will prevent the nail polish from adhering to it.

Step 1:

Position your sticker or adhesive stencil anywhere on your mug. I made my stencil using my Cricut Explore Air because 1. I didn’t have a heart shaped sticker and 2. The adhesive stencil/sticker peels off very easily. I placed my sticker at a slant in the lower right corner of my mug.

Step 2:

Fill your plastic bowl with enough warm water to be able to dip a good portion of your mug in. Now pour some of your red nail polish, then pink nail polish (or visa versa)  into your warm water. You will notice that the nail polish spreads out to cover most of the water. Pretty cool huh?

TIP: You will have to work quickly  because the nail polish hardens pretty fast and will not adhere to the mug if you wait too long, so keep your mug close at hand.

Step 3:

Dip your mug into the bowl, being sure to cover the heart shaped sticker AND making sure NOT to get any inside of your mug or anywhere near the rim where you place your lips.

When you’re done, place your mug upside down on a flat surface to dry.

Step 4:

Once your mug dries, the fun continues 🙂 Now you can go ahead and remove the sticker to reveal the heart shape underneath.

And there you have it. You now have a one of a kind, awesome mug that YOU made!

What I personally love about this is that each mug is different from the next so no two mugs are ever the same. You can make these as gifts for anyone and any occasion.

Instead of adding a heart shaped sticker, consider adding the persons initials instead. If its for your child’s teacher, use an adhesive apple shaped stencil and dip the mug in red nail polish.

Here a some other mugs I’ve tried. The pink and green one have a spring time feel, and the two shades of blue reminds me of the beach.

Thats all for now, I hope you enjoyed this DIY. If you give it a try, please share your pictures with us or tag us on Instagram: @wittythings.us

Until next time… Happy Crafting!
