Law Enforcement, Retirement Shadowbox (Custom Ordered)

We are happy to share a recent custom order commissioned by our local Police Department. This large piece pays tribute to a retiring Captain, by including representative items acquired during his career.

The all-wood shadowbox was painted a semigloss black, and encased behind durable plexiglass – to protect against shattering.

The Captain’s items were embedded on black mounting felt to help showcase the items themselves. Centered in front of the thin blue line is the name place typically assigned to each officer’s locker.

The “thin blue line” is a term that typically refers to the concept of the police as the line which keeps society from descending into violent chaos.

Beneath that you’ll find unit patches showcasing service in the Police Department’s Emergency Response Team. The corresponding ERT pin is placed directly underneath the POLICE patch.

Next you’ll find a set of the Captain’s badges, from Police Officer, to Sergeant, Lieutenant and then Captain.

Beneath that you’ll find a similar set or chevrons, which serve as rank insignias showcasing the ranks of Captain, Lieutenant and Sergeant.

Next is an AR-style decommissioned magazine, and an unserviceable training flash bang grenade. You don’t think we’d use a real flash bang, do you?

The Captain’s name plaque, formerly hung in his uniform locker, was centered between the items with a wonderful message from the department.

How would you decorate yours?
